Why did my customer receive a “pending” message when they redeemed their points for a coupon?

This is occurring because in order for coupons to function on swell you must first add coupon codes. The good news is..you no longer have to create coupon codes in Bulk Discounts, because we have enabled automatically generating coupon codes!! 

If you haven't yet, click the big blue bar at the top of your "Spending Points" section to enable this feature (new users you will already have this feature enabled).
