Anti Fraud Measures

Swell has built in a number of protections to prevent site visitors from "gaming" the referral program. Remember that some of these may impact your tests of the program!

To make sure that referrers don't attempt to refer themselves, we use two parameters to identify a "unique" person:

  1. IP Address, which helps us identify the location of the person taking part in the program
  2. User Agent, which contains detailed information about the user's web browser: their browser type (e.g. Chrome), version, etc.

When a "referred customer" clicks on a unique referral link, Swell automatically checks to make sure that both the IP Address and User Agent do not match that of the referrer. If both items match, that's a good indication to our system that somebody has sent the link to themselves, and the system will not display the Referred Customer Welcome popup.
